The recast EWC directive: Better information and consultation rights for European Works Councils?

Conference in Brussels on 23rd and 24th March 2009

The European conference organised by SDA and ETUC focused on the recast of the Directive on European Works Councils under several points of view. The long political and the institutional process which brought to the text approved in December 2008 has been gone through and commented by the protagonists: the institutional representatives and the social partners. The legal uncertainties that the recast rectifies, and … its “shadows” have been presented by legal experts. EWC coordinators and members and HR representatives reported their experiences so far and discussed the possible changes that the recast is going to produce in the everyday practice. Employees information and consultation rights have been finally framed in the context of the crisis, in terms of their potential to contrast wild liberalism and the adoption of short term strategies, whose social price is only paid by workers.

Please find hereunder the agenda of the two days conference, the speech of Commissioner Spidla, the power point presentations of the speakers (in different languages), and some pictures.
